Medical Gloves – Who Wins Hands Down?

If you have been exposed to the medical profession even for a brief encounter, you would know that protective gloves in healthcare are a must.  But not all gloves are created equal.

The classic glove used in the medical profession is latex.  Latex has been used for centuries for many different purposes under various names, the most popular being rubber.  Yes, latex gloves are made of rubber.
The first use of rubber as a glove in the medical profession dates back to the late 1800’s by a man named William Steward Halsted.  He was trying to improve methods for sterilization and asked a major tire company if they could make a glove that could be dipped in carbolic acid.  Thus the latex glove was born.  It wasn’t until 1964 that disposable latex gloves began to be manufactured and changed the medical profession as well as many other professions forever.
Unfortunately for latex, it was soon found out that many people were allergic to latex.  Today nearly 7 percent of the population and over 15 percent of medical personnel are allergic to latex.  A substitution needed to be provided.  As time and engineering have progressed latex substitutes have come to the market in the form of neoprene, vinyl, and polyisoprene gloves.
The substitutes, though they have come a long way over the years in terms of remaining sensitivity for the wearer, are much more expensive than latex (In  some cases over 50% more ) and many physicians still argue they don’t get the same sensitivity in their hands as they do with latex.
As for who wins, well, that’s really up to the user.  For example, nitrile gloves are considered some of the most durable gloves on the market.  Some studies suggest they are 300% more resistant to puncture than latex gloves.  The trade off?   Nitrile gloves do not fit as tightly as latex, are less strong than latex, and many wearers claim a significant reduction in dexterity.  But these gloves are extremely popular with dental offices nationwide whereas the medical profession would prefer polyisoprene as a substitute for latex.
Fortunately for you HRS Direct, your trusted medical supply store, has a wide variety of medical gloves to suit your needs.  From heavy medical office use to home health care needs, HRS Direct stands ready to help.  Call us today at 800.457.0477 or visit us on the web by clicking on the link above.

Featured Health Care Products - Finger Separators

You might not be familiar with finger separators, but they are an invaluable tool when working to rehabilitate fingers, palms, and other areas of the hand during recuperation.
Finger separators are used primarily on people who have suffered hand/finger injuries, hand surgery, spastic muscle movement, rheumatoid arthritis, brain/spinal cord injury, deformities, and other ailments not mentioned here.
Finger separators, when used properly under the supervision of your doctor, can decrease healing time and reduce pain and pressure on the affected area.
As with all health care products, be careful when using a finger separator.  It might seem like an easy enough piece of equipment, but there are some things you should look out for.  First, after you have fitted your finger separator comfortably so as not to irritate your skin.  Then there is the skin test itself.  Make sure the soft tissue isn’t getting irritated or that you are experiencing numbness or tingling in your hand/arm also known as paresthesias.
Many finger separators can be adjusted for increased comfort.  Others can be custom fit for maximum comfort.   Make sure those fitting you with a splint with finger separators asks you questions regarding how secure the splint feels, irritation to skin or position (if any), daily activities, need for movement, discomfort or pain while wearing the splint, etc.  Take this list with you and add individualized questions to address your specific situation.  Better safe than sorry.

Durable Medical Equipment (DME) - Transfer Assist Devices

Those who are experiencing health care at home know it’s nice to have help there when you need it.  But what about assistance when no one is there to help? What then?  That’s why durable medical equipment (DME) transfer assist devices were developed, to give assistance to you and others when help is needed.
Transfer assistance devices work in two ways.  First, they offer stability for patience where they once felt vulnerable.  Oddly enough this vulnerable place is often the bedroom; in fact, the bed itself!  For many home health care patients, getting in and out of bed can be not only a chore, but has an increased propensity for accident.
The CDC recognizes moving from the bed to a chair is one of the leading causes of falls amongst elderly home health care patients.  The transfer assist device was designed to create a railing of support for both a caregiver and a patient to utilize to increase safety and stability during the transition of upright to sleep and vice versa.
There are a variety of options available on our website.  You can call us today at 800.457.0477 or visit us on the web by clicking on the link below. For the best DME equipment available think HRS Direct!
